Alex Schmidt’s practice is concentrated in the areas of complex bankruptcy and insurance-related litigation, representing major insurance companies in federal and state courts across the country.
Before joining Ruggeri Parks Weinberg, Alex served as an attorney in the Internal Revenue Service’s Office of Chief Counsel, where he coordinated the U.S. government’s response in high-profile Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases, including Endo Pharmaceuticals, PG&E, Party City, and FTX. His experience included drafting and reviewing trial and appellate bankruptcy filings, including motions, briefs, proofs of claim and plan objections. Alex supported Department of Justice attorneys with bankruptcy and tax matters, providing subject matter expertise before, during, and after litigation. He participated in settlement negotiations that helped recover hundreds of millions of dollars in high-risk cases, and assisted the Solicitor General’s Office in United States v. Miller, a bankruptcy matter heard by the U.S. Supreme Court involving a trustee’s ability to avoid tax payments under section 544(b) of the Bankruptcy Code.
Alex previously served as term law clerk for the Honorable John P. Gustafson of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio, from 2017 through 2020. He has authored articles on bankruptcy matters published in the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal, the Norton Bankruptcy Law Adviser, and on the National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees’ Academy website.
Alex is currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center, where he teaches Taxation of Bankruptcies & Workouts.
