What is the most rewarding aspect of your practice? I love the challenge of looking at a complex insurance program and making sense of how different policies and provisions are meant to fit together. It is really rewarding to read a summary judgment order or an appellate court opinion and see that we’ve succeeded in persuading the judge or panel that the pieces of the puzzle can only fit together in the way we’ve said they do.
Who’s been a key mentor in your career, and what’s a piece of advice that stuck with you? I am incredibly lucky to have spent the past ten years working alongside Jim Ruggeri and Ed Parks. Jim and Ed are brilliant lawyers whose creativity, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to our clients set the tone for everyone on our team. While I’ve learned from and emulated many aspects of Jim’s and Ed’s approaches, I’ve also benefited from a piece of advice Jim gave me early in my career: every lawyer has to find their own voice and style. That advice has stuck with me over the years and has helped me to become a more comfortable, natural, and effective advocate for our clients.
What’s a book, movie, or show you always recommend? It’s been a while since I’ve watched it now, but I always come back to a childhood favorite that my siblings and I watched more times than I can count: the 1985 movie Clue. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. It always makes me laugh, and I think it was instrumental in teaching me to communicate with precision. (Don’t say “he had threatened to kill me in public” if you mean “he had threatened, in public, to kill me”!)
What’s your go-to way to recharge after a long day? I recharge by spending time with my husband, Andrew, our kids, Oscar (6) and Maeve (4), and our dog, Arrow. My favorite part of the day is bedtime with the kids. I love reading them bedtime stories, hearing about their days, and answering their questions (which can be surprisingly challenging!).
Do you have any hidden talents or unexpected hobbies? Growing up, I was a fairly serious piano player. I’m nowhere near as good as I once was, but I can still play just about anything I hear by ear, which makes for a fun party trick.
